Chapter 5

“And you’re sure there is nothing you can tell me about who set the bomb,” Janie said folding her arms and glaring into the policeman’s eyes. She stood outside what was left of the restaurant, Jessie and James had been dining in before the explosion. Police tape was everywhere holding the masses of people back. She wanted to talk to Officer Jenny, she knew she scared the shit out of her, but she couldn’t very well tell that to this guy.

“Sorry about that, love” he dully said as he scratched his behind. Janie stared at him in disgust,

“Well thanks for nothing!”

It was then she heard the annoying, but orderly voice of the person she was looking for.

“What’s going on here?” Officer Jenny demanded, glaring at Janie.

I, was simply trying to discover who almost killed my two best friends” she quoted.

“Well don’t take it out on a police officer.”

“I was doing no such thing.”

Jenny hummed disapprovingly, making the fuse of Janie’s temper burn faster.

“Maybe you could be so kind as to tell me information you have collected about the bomber, huh?” Janie said sweetly as she smiled patronisingly at her. Jenny shuffled uncomfortably where she stood, not daring to meet Janie’s eye.

“I’m not allowed to give information to just anybody, you know,” she stated.

“I’m not just anybody,” Janie shouted, gaining the attention of many curious members of the public, “my friend could die, and I had to go in there and get her out myself because you were all so crap the other day.” She had lost her temper now.

“Really…well…”

“I know your name you know!” Smiled Janie gathering herself again.

“I’ll see what I can find.” Officer Jenny shuddered as she turned to leave. Janie grinned with satisfaction, she had got to her, it worked every time! She just hoped it was worth while.

She waited…and waited until she saw Jenny appear from the crowd of police men behind the police tape,

“Nothing,” she stammered. Janie looked at her coldly, not sure whether to believe her and then walked off.

She sat down on a bench nearby and let her three pokemon out of their pokeballs so she could watch them run about. It would take her mind off the situation her life was in. She watched as Vaporeon, Venonat and Pikachu ran round the plain grass land the bench faced. She hadn’t let them out of their pokeballs for a while. Janie brushed her dark hair from her face and refused to let her mind focus on Jessie. She knew it would only remind her of the state James was in over her, she was so worried about him. He hadn’t been himself since accident to such an extent that Janie found it hard to recognise him as ‘her friend James’, he was like someone else. He was someone else.

“Janie,” she heard someone call from a distance, she turned round and her eyes found James running towards her. “ I knew you’d be here.” He said nodding towards the crowds lining the restaurant.

“Why are you here?” Janie asked.

“They let me out.”

“That’s great,” she said, “no, that is really great.” She gave him a quick hug. “I spoke to Officer Jenny about the bomb, who did it I mean”

James seemed to ignore this, he just brushed back his hair with his hand and hugged himself. “I wanna go home.” He moaned.

“Back to normal already,” Janie sighed, relieved.

“Ash, what has got into you, a couple of weeks ago you would have thrown a party if Team Rocket died.” Misty screamed, Ash sunk low into his chair,

“I know but…”

“What’s wrong with you?” Misty shrieked.

“Nothing’s wrong with me.”

“Then why have you been going on and on about Jessie dying?”

Brock and Pikachu looked around, ashamed to be apart of the scene Misty and Ash were causing. They were eating dinner in the diner of the hotel they were staying in, and it was a pretty classy place!

“Chill guys,” Brock pleaded. Misty got up and announced she was going to bed and stormed off, stamping her feet on the floor and she went.

“Ash, are you sure you’re OK?” Brock asked when Misty had disappeared from sight.

“I’M FINE OK?!” Ash screamed as he picked up Pikachu and left also. Brock sat at the table alone, with is head in his hands, until he realised they had left him with the bill…

The next morning, James lay on his sofa letting out harsh sighs ever now and again. Janie stared at him blankly as she sat in front of him on the floor. She felt at home there, her, Jessie and James had spent many hours just sitting around chatting, laughing, planning and watching the which none of them had ever paid the lisence for. It was more of a home to Janie than her hotel room down the road.

“Do you want to go to the hospital?” She asked.

“I have just spent the last two weeks there, no” he replied.

“I want to see if Jessie is OK.” Janie stammered, shocked by his emotionless reply. James closed his eyes tightly, when he opened them again, in a thick shiny film clung to them. After a few seconds, the film began to melt away, falling down his face as tears.

“I can’t.” He whispered.

“Can’t what?”

“Can’t pretend nothings wrong, wipe her away.”

“Who’s asking you to?”

“I don’t know.”

“Come with me to the hospital, please,” Janie stood up and held out her hand for him to take it. He did so, and they began the short walk through the park to the hospital. Ash met them at the door screaming at them that Jessie had regained conscienceness and was angry with them. James and Janie rushed to reception, found out where she was and sprinted to her cubicle. She was indeed awake and just as Ash had said, she looked angry.

“Where were you?” She asked, “You’ll never guess who I have had in here, that cow Jessibelle!”

James’ face instantly lost it’s colour, “did you say…”

Jessibelle, yes, you know the bitch your parents want you to marry?” Jessie scowled, “and I’m angry with you because I’ve been awake for hours and bored stiff, where have you been?” James gave into himself and gave her a hug, which he got a slap for, “answer the question!”

James winked at Janie.

“We’re allowed to go for a walk aren’t we Jessie?” Janie said, in a tone she knew annoyed Jessie. But instead of shouting, there was an awkward silence. It seemed to go on forever, but then James broke it as he announced he was off to get some coffee.

“Get me one.” Janie said

“And me,” Jessie put in. James walked quickly out leaving Jessie and Janie alone.

“Did you enjoy it?” Said Janie at last with a cheeky grin.

“Enjoy what?”

“You’re near – death experience!”

“Very funny.”

Janie smiled to herself as she thought about the question she was about to ask.

“Jessie,” she started, “there is one question I’ve been meaning to ask, and I couldn’t ask James because…every time I mentioned your name, he broke down in tears and brought me with him.” She stopped to see if Jessie was listening. She was, Janie saw she looked touched but focused, so she carried on, “what exactly were you doing…”

Shhhh,” Jessie hissed, “listen.”

“To what?”

Shhhhhh! You hear that?”

“Hear what, go over to the vent.”

Janie did as she was told, putting her eye to the vent she listened hard. There was definitely something in there, she’d know that sound anywhere,

Pikachu?” She said softly as not to scare it away. She looked up and sure enough, there was Pikachu staring back at her. She gave it one of her evil smiles.

“Spying on us are we? No doubt Ketchem sent you, or maybe he’s behind you, or maybe…” She gave a chuckle as she said this, “…you have seen sense and you’ve come over to our side. Though I doubt that.”

“PIKACHU!” Janie heard a crash behind her and swung round to find Jessie in extreme pain on the floor. Janie helped her back onto the bed giggling to herself.

“You’ll be saying ‘go Arbok’ next,” she smiled referring to Jessie’s snake-like pokemon. “You can’t walk, Jess.”

Jessie put her head in her hands, “worse luck.” Looking up at Janie with a look of expectation on her face she then shouted, “don’t just stand there get that fucking Pikachu!” Getting out a pokeball, intending to let out Arbok she through is across the room towards the vent. Janie quickly reached out and caught it before it opened. “What are you doing?” Jessie scolded.

“Do you want to get worse?”

“No, but…”

“Then an electric shock is the last thing you need,” Janie shouted.

“Doctor’s orders are the last thing I need, especially when they are coming from you” Jessie hissed. A raging argument came about after this, which practically everyone else in the hospital listened to, including Ash, Misty and Brock who were in the waiting room.

“Looks like Jessie’s back,” Ash laughed.

“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?” Brock pondered. James then came in with three coffees in his hands hearing the argument clearly and sighing knowingly. He scanned the waiting room for Meowth and, finding he wasn’t there, made his way to the scene of the argument.

“Ash, where are you going?” Misty asked as he got up and followed James.

“To see what’s going on,” he answered, “they’re disturbing the sick people.”

“That’s more like his usual self,” Brock smiled.

“Yeah, but he hasn’t even asked where Pikachu is, it’s been gone for a good half hour.” Misty stared at the floor wondering why they were even there. She had left her baby pokemon Togepi back at her hotel room, Ash had insisted on leaving so early! What was the big deal about Team Rocket anyway? That was what she wanted to know. They were all going to be fine so what was the problem, she was thinking. Ash hadn’t even talked about challenging the city gym leader, or catching anymore pokemon since they heard the news from Jessie and James’ rival Team Rocket members, Butch and Cassidy, and how did they know about it?
